Specialist Adult Tic Disorder Assessment

Specialist adult tic disorder assessment

Understand whether your symptoms may meet the criteria for a tic disorder.

Many adults live with tics for years without ever receiving a formal diagnosis. Others may have been told they have "nervous habits" or "anxiety", without anyone fully exploring whether they meet the criteria for a tic disorder such as Tourette's syndrome.

At Attention to Health, we offer comprehensive specialist assessments for adults who would like to understand whether they have a tic disorder and explore the most appropriate treatment options.

Assessed by Dr Laura Wade

Assessments are completed by Dr Laura Wade, Principal Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience in neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and tic disorders.

Dr Wade takes a compassionate, evidence-based approach, recognising that tics can have a significant impact on confidence, work, relationships and day-to-day life.

Who is this assessment for?

Adults who have experienced motor and/or vocal tics, either currently or in the past.

People who suspect they may have Tourette's syndrome or another tic disorder.

Adults who have never received a formal diagnosis.

People who would like to understand whether treatment may help.

Those seeking specialist therapy such as Habit Reversal Training or CBT for Tics.

The assessment process

Comprehensive clinical interview

A detailed developmental history exploring when your tics began, how they have changed, the types of tics you experience, triggers, and their impact on daily life.

Diagnostic assessment

We assess whether your presentation meets diagnostic criteria for a tic disorder, including Tourette's syndrome, based on symptom pattern, duration, onset and alternative explanations.

Differential diagnosis

Not all repetitive movements or sounds are tics. We carefully consider other possible explanations and help distinguish tic disorders from other neurological or psychological conditions.

Screening for related conditions

Tic disorders commonly occur alongside ADHD, OCD, anxiety and other neurodevelopmental or psychological conditions. These are considered as part of the assessment.

Following your assessment

You will receive a comprehensive written report summarising your findings and recommendations.

Your assessment findings
Whether you meet diagnostic criteria for a tic disorder or Tourette's syndrome
Any identified co-occurring conditions
Personalised recommendations for treatment and support

Evidence-based treatment

First-line behavioural treatment

Habit Reversal Training

HRT helps you recognise early warning signs and develop effective competing responses, reducing the impact tics have on daily life.

Why choose Attention to Health?

At Attention to Health, we specialise in the assessment and treatment of neurodevelopmental conditions. Our clinicians understand the complex relationship between tic disorders, ADHD, OCD, anxiety and other co-occurring conditions.

This allows us to provide a thorough, holistic assessment rather than focusing solely on the tics themselves.

Whether you are seeking answers after years of uncertainty or looking to access specialist treatment, our team is here to help you better understand your symptoms and develop an evidence-based plan for moving forward.
